Rin finally found solitude underneath a sakura tree amidst the broad expansion of the palace garden and there she sat in its shade watching delicate blossoms flutter carelessly in the cool spring breeze.
"Rin?" a voice called from behind. Rin looked back to see Kagome slowly approaching her, her hair blowing gracefully in the wind. "May I join you?" she asked gently, hasting herself steps away.
Rin nodded, then asked, "How did you find me?"
"Your aura has grown to be very strong and hard to ignore," Kagome smiled as she joined Rin at the base of the tree. "It's almost as if I were attracted to it."
"Like a moth to fire?" Rin bitterly replied.
"No!" Kagome cried. She tilted her head thoughtful, then said, "More like a bee to the sweetest flower."
Rin couldn't help but smile at the comment and even giggled, but her sadness returned.
"What's the matter, Rin? You're not yourself," Kagome noted. "Is something troubling you? I know how much you enjoy the festival."
Rin looked up to Kagome, and then away. She was hesitant to answer, but something about the kindness in Kagome's eyes forced her to. "Everything is changing so quickly. Kohaku is leaving to become a demon slayer and now . . . Now Sesshomaru is going to leave me here."
Kagome's expression softened and she was unsure what to say to reassure because of her promise, but finally she came to a resolve. "Sesshomaru will not leave you, I can promise you that," Kagome whispered as she gazed off into the distance. "You will have to be the one to know when to let go."
Rin stared up to the priestess with puzzlement, but before she could ask for an explanation, Kagome abruptly rose to her feet and began to walk away. "You should go to the pond house before Sesshomaru begins to worry."
"You're right, Kagome," Rin softly replied, standing up. "Thank you. I see now what I must do."
Kagome silently nodded, then began to walk back towards the palace.
The others had left earlier that evening to reserve a spot for the fireworks ceremony, so it was odd when Sesshomaru could hear the thud of quick footsteps outside, then a faint shadow of a woman could be seen through the papered panels of the shoji.
"Lord Sesshomaru, I desire to speak to you," a sweet voice said. Sesshomaru would recognize that voice anywhere and the scent was unmistakable.
"If you must," Sesshomaru crooned back. Vigoriously the shoji swiped away and stopped with loud clack of wood. Sesshomaru looked up to see if he had somehow mistaken someone else to be Rin, but there before him was his beloved ward looking positively distressed.
Rin glared at him with redden eyes and her breathing was unnaturally heavy. "A long time ago, I asked you if you would remember me after I died," Rin gulped as she strained to hold back the burning tears, "and you told me not to be stupid . . . I should've known then."
"Known what?" he replied softly, averting his glare. He could not stand to look at her when she cried as a child, and it was even harder as a woman.
"I should've known that you held not even the slightest bit of compassion for me," Rin replied darkly.
"Rin—" Sesshomaru beckoned just as she began to slide close the shoji door.
"If I were to drop dead this very moment," Rin interrupted, glancing back to Sesshomaru, "you wouldn't care, not even a little."
"Rin!—" he attempted again, his tone losing its coolness.
"I understand now," she chuckled painfully, casting her head up to the roof. "It was stupid of me to believe that you could possibly love me."
"Rin!—" he bellowed only to be foiled once more.
"And that is why I have decided to stay here with Kagome and become a priestess," she quickly announced.
Sesshomaru face failed him and he grimaced as he heart wrenched at the news. His heartbreak quickly transformed into bitter anger. How could she leave him? How dare she leave him! "If that is what you wish!" he barked at her, his eyes flaring red. "Do what you will!"
Unnerved by the dog lord's wrathful disposition, Rin whispered, "I was always afraid you would leave me behind one day." She turned to leave, but then she glanced over her shoulder and solemnly added, "I am no longer afraid, Sesshomaru." It was the first time she hadn't addressed him as lord. Without another word, Rin slammed the shoji door behind her and disappeared.
"Rin," Sesshomaru whimpered, his head slumping over and his eyes sliding close.
Finally nightfall came, and Sesshomaru had not moved and he continued to sit alone staring at the doorway where Rin had broken his heart. Amongst the deafening pops and bright colored lights flashing into the room, Sesshomaru silently wept. It wasn't until silence had befallen the town, did the dog lord rise to his feet. He had to leave this place, he couldn't bear to be here any longer. It was too painful. Like a ghost he crept through the town's streets still full of spectators making their way home, and it wasn't until he arrived to the gates was he alone again. However, his departure did not go unseen by one.
"Where are you off to?" a voice called after him just as he entered the forest.
Sesshomaru glanced over his shoulder to see Inuyasha standing at the entrance, a disapproving look upon his face.
"I'm leaving," Sesshomaru replied in a soft voice.
"Without Rin?" Inuyasha said, his brow rising with shock.
Sesshomaru's heart wrenched at the very sound of her name and his face contorted momentarily, breaking his emotionless facade he strived to preserve. Disregarding his brother and his feelings, he silently continued his descent.
"What should I tell her then?" Inuyasha yelled after him, his voice lashing down upon Sesshomaru.
"Tell her she was wrong . . ." he replied, then in one magnificent leap he was gone.

Rin and Sesshomaru
Rin and Sesshomaru, a short story.
Rin was curled up next to the two headed flying horse, Ah-un, shivering. Her blanket was pulled up over her head and she held it there with tiny, white knuckled fists.
She wasn't cold. In fact she was almost smothering herself while trying to breathe through the blanket.
No. She was scared. Terrified.
Just as she'd been about to drift off to sleep, she heard it. The piercing howls of wolves reached her ears, frightening sleep away.
She'd been lying lik

Just as Sesshomaru had planned, Jaken had survived the battle, both unscathed and unnoticed. By the time he had managed to fight his way out from under the pile of debris and demon corpses, the battle was long over. Jaken knew that Sesshomaru was most often to be found at the head of any swath of destruction, so he slowly picked his way through the wreckage until he found the hillock where Sesshomaru had made his last stand.
